FTC site teaches youth about the effect of advertising

17 May, 2010

While knowing how to handle money and credit cards is important, there are other things young people should stay informed about, including advertisements.

The Federal Trade Commission recently launched an initiative focusing on young people between the ages of 8 and 12. The goal of the campaign is to teach this group of consumers how advertisements may affect the decision-making process.

A website, www.Admongo.gov, offers free pointers and educational games. Along with kids, parents and teachers may be able to use the site to educate their children about advertising.

“To me, the great thing about Admongo is that its gaming format is designed to reach out to children right at the age where they can actually distinguish between content and advertising,” said C. Lee Peeler, president and CEO of the National Advertising Review Council.

While children are the focus of Admongo, another government website was relaunched that offers financial advice to consumers of all ages. With www.MyMoney.gov, people can get help planning for their financial future, which includes tips on how to deal with credit card debt and set aside savings.
