Hacker Group Behind Sony and CIA Breaches Goes Out of Business

25 June, 2011

A hacker group behind major security breaches like that of Sony Corp., the CIA and the U.S. Senate, has announced it will be going out of business. The group began its cyber-attacks on major companies and government entities almost two months ago, but has announced via Twitter its “planned 50 day cruise has expired.”

Lulz Security, the hacker group that has caused problems for a number of major business and government entities over the past few weeks has decided that it will now be going out of business.

The group gained attention after publicly announcing its takedowns of the CIA’s public website, Nintendo Co.’s computers, InfraGard (an information-sharing organization of companies affiliated with the FBI to thwart cybercrime), the U.S. Senate’s website and also stealing and posting the personal information of over 77 million Sony Corp. customers.

The group, which is said to consist of 6-8 people and is led by one hacker named ”Sabu,” says it was simply ready to disband and move on to other ventures. However, some speculate that with the recent arrests in Spain of three suspected members of another hacker group called Anonymous, members of Lulzsec disbanded out of fear.

In related news, Citigroup announced last month’s security breach resulted in lost information in over 360,000 accounts, as well as $2.7 million stolen from about 3,400 customer credit card accounts.

While the number accounts hacked was larger than the 200,000 Citi originally, the company still maintains that the number of compromised accounts was only about 1 percent of its total customer base.

The bank noted customers will not be responsible for the financial losses stemming from the attacks. Also, the bank says it has issued new cards to customers who chose to keep their accounts. However, customers will need to be vigilant in learning about identity theft in the event that the hackers attempt to use their information for other purposes.
