Top Mutual Funds Named by Standard & Poor’s

31 October, 2010

The best mutual funds in the U.S. were highlighted by Standard & Poor’s on Monday with its first U.S. Mutual Funds Excellence Awards Program. The idea of the program was to find value in domestic funds, which are becoming less popular since many investors of mutual funds are looking overseas to make investments.

Criteria for Program

S&P Equity Research used the award program to recognize the U.S. mutual funds that have achieved the highest overall rankings on the most consistent basis during the measurement year.

S&P based its standards on its own proprietary, quantitative research methodology. As a result, it was able to identify 29 funds that achieved the highest overall five-star quantitative ranking in each of its respective categories, giving the funds gold, silver or bronze placements based on its criteria.

Winners were named during a webcast on Monday.

Best Mutual Funds

Based on its criteria, S&P named the following mutual funds as gold winners in their categories:

  • Janus Triton Fund: This fund received a five-star ranking due to its ability to outperform its small-cap growth peers on a one-, three- and five-year total return bases through Sept. 2010. It was also able to incur a modest expense ratio and low turnover rate.
  • Meridian Growth Fund – The gold winner for the mid-cap category went to Meridian Growth Fund. It was able to outperform its peers by more than 500 basis points on both short and longer-time periods, placing it in an S&P five-star category.
  • Jensen Portfolio: This mutual fund took the gold among domestic large-cap equity mutual funds because it invests in dividend-paying U.S. stocks that get a good portion of its revenue from international markets. It also has a strong track record because it invests in companies with strong financial profiles over a 10-year period.

Other categories for bronze, silver and gold awards included global, international, domestic and new and notable equities. Check out the complete list of mutual funds rankings to see if yours made the cut.
