Using a credit card to buy an auto

17 May, 2010

Credit cards can be quite effective as a way of buying an auto, but it needs to be done intelligently.  Credit cards are seen as a great way to buy smaller items, as credit cards are an always available source of credit.  However autos are not seen as one of those items, because they are so expensive and therefore are higher than many cards credit limits.

Credit limits are the maximum amount that can be borrowed on a card.  It has the same effect as running out of money in a current account.  When buying an auto, even a used auto, and the credit limit will often be considerably lower than the cost of the auto.

It may be possible to increase the credit limit to buy an auto.  This should be done by phoning up the credit company before buying the auto and asking for an increase in the credit limit.  It is a good idea to explain what the increase in the credit limit is for.  If the credit limit is at first refused it may be possible to get a lift in the credit limit.

Many credit card holders will have more than one credit card.  This can be used in two ways.  First it can be used as a reserve so that if one credit refuses the card holder, another card issuer may be called.  Another way to use this is to split the purchase among a number of credit cards.  It is still a good idea to call the cards first.

It is often a good idea to get a new credit card specifically to buy the automobile.  This is partly because it may not be possible to get sufficient credit on the current cards.  It is also the case that there may be some advantages in getting a new card, even if it is possible to borrow enough on the existing cards.

New cards may have a number of advantages over using existing cards.  The first is that some new cards allow for interest free purchases for an introductory period.  This can cut the cost of finance considerably.  The second is that there may be an accelerated cash back allowance on a new card for a short period of time.  This can be for as much as 5%.  This can be a considerable amount on a $10,000 purchase.
